Harman Corporation: Industry leader in the manufacturing of phthalate free vinyl products

What Are Phthalates?

Phthalates are a family of compounds that have been used safely in plastics for over 40 years. Their main purpose is to make plastics softer and improve their performance. Find more information on phthalates:

Phthalates are colorless, oily liquids with little odor and low volatility used in a wide variety of everyday products. Their main purpose is to be used as a plasticizer in plastic products manufacturing. They make hard plastic, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC), flexible and soft without affecting the durability and lifespan. Global GP phthalate plasticizer production was developed over the last 60 years and has a capacity of 10-billion pounds.

Harman Corporation vigorously supports the extensive safety record associated with DIDP and DINP, two high molecular weight phthalate plasticizers used in the company’s flexible vinyl products. DIDP and DINP have a safety record that dates back over 50 years and has been objectively reviewed in studies conducted by:

  • Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • European Chemicals Bureau, EU
