Many plastic products contain compounds called phthalates, which make plastics flexible and soft while extending their life. Currently, there are many products that do contain phthalates including artificial leather, automotive interior components , garden hoses, vinyl flooring, personal care products and more. Toys and other children products have also been manufactured with phthalates. In 2008, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which included a permanent ban on the use of 3 phthalates (DEHP, DBP and BBP) in toys and children’s products and a temporary ban in the same products of DIDP, DINP and DnOP pending further evaluation by a Chronic Hazards Advisory Panel. The ban includes child care articles for children age 3 and under and toys for children age 12 and under, all of which can be placed in the mouth.
